Barak & Sheba will be speaking at my HDFS 5440 classroom on The Ohio State University Main Campus (Townshend Hall, Room 247) on Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 11:10 am to 12:30 pm. If you wish to bring a friend, make certain to tell them that chairs are not part of the bargain. There are just enough chairs for students enrolled in the class. All others should be prepared to grab a square of carpet.

This panel is offered to students along with readings:

Barak & Sheba are pansexual, polyamorous, married partners who reside in Columbus, Ohio; with some gigantic cats. They are Contributing Authors for Sexis Online Magazine and have written numerous short stories and essays on Polyamory, Kink, and Sacred Sexuality. Traveling around the country, they present classes for Kink, Leather, and Vanilla audiences. On the first Monday of each month, you can hear them talking about all forms of creative sexual expression on BS’ing with Barak & Sheba hosted by the Erotic Awakenings Podcast network. Together they are the founding members and owners of Adventures in Sexuality(AIS), a fun, frolicking, PanPolyBSDM/Kink group in Central Ohio. Through AIS they are Coalition members of the NCSF (National Coalition for Sexual Freedom) are active supporters of The Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio (SARNCO) and the Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization (BRAVO). They currently promote Pansexual BDSM Educational Events in Central Ohio.

In their “Intro to Kink” presentation, they introduce the audience to the Who, What, Why, Where and How of Sensation, Roleplay, Fetish, and Bondage. You are hearing about Bondage, BDSM, Kinky Sex, and many of the taboo buzzwords thrown all over, since 50 shades came out. But what does it all mean? How do people “spice” up their relationship without going overboard? In this informational class, they discuss the general avenues that make up Kink, Alt Sex, or Creative sexuality. They offer some general guidelines, and provide a PG-13 rated “show and tell” that illustrates some key points.

polycolumbus logo 2015

Representatives from PolyColumbus will visit my HDFS 5440 classroom on The Ohio State University Main Campus (Townshend Hall, Room 247) on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 from 11:10 am  to 12:30 pm. PolyColumbus is a growing non-profit organization that provides a safe place for those who are purposefully non-monogamous to learn, share, and build community.

After a brief introduction by the panel, there will be an informative Question&Answer period for students.

If you are in another instructor’s 5440 or you’ve taken it with me previously… YES, you may come. But it’s standing room only… you may need to grab a square of carpet. If you wish to bring a friend? Same thing applies. Make certain to tell them that chairs aren’t part of the bargain.

This IS an extra credit opportunity for students in my 2367 class.

THEIR MISSION (From their website):

PolyColumbus empowers individuals that either self-identify as polyamorous, open, or ethically non-monogamous, or are exploring such possibilities. We build community to provide a safe and inclusive place to not only be ourselves, but also meet like-minded individuals from all backgrounds.

We advocate for the equal treatment of the ethically non-monogamous under law, and for broader societal acceptance of the same. We serve organizations with similar goals by documenting best practices and creating other resources for successfully running such an organization.

Finally, we educate each other, allied organizations, and the broader community on what it means to be ethically non-monogamous.

INSTRUCTOR NOTES:

*If you – or someone you know – is interested in this group, more information is available on their website (links above throughout) or here if you would prefer to copy and paste:http://www.polycolumbus.org

*For additional information, about purposeful non-monogamy,  I recommend a visit to Looking Through.Us

Speakers: “Power Exchange” with Ms. Brenda&arcane and Kevin&katie (March 10, 2015)

We had the pleasure of hosting two power exchange couples in this week’s HDFS 5440 (Human Sexuality) classroom.  The couples spoke about their relationships (both use the “Master” and “slave” titles and capitalization conventions in their bios below will reflect that).

During their visit, students learned about a variety of ways in which people live power exchange relationships and had an opportunity to answer questions and receive candid responses.

The visit was informative and appreciated. We look forward to hearing more from both couples and wish Ms. Brenda and arcane luck in their upcoming competition.

If some terminology is unfamiliar, please visit the NCSF (National Coalition for Sexual Freedom) for the Glossary of BDSM they provide.

NOTE: This presentation was about consensual relationships and should not be confused with domestic violence or sexual abuse. If you need -or someone you know needs- help due to a non-consensual relationship, please contact local authorities or a reputable organization such as the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) at  1-(800) 656.HOPE

If you wish to contact these speakers  please contact Anita Parker. I would be happy to forward your information to them.

 Ms. Brenda and arcane

unnamed

Ms. Brenda and arcane are a 24/7 power exchange couple.

She was born and raised in Florida, where she was a professional wrestler, and worked in retail management.  She moved to Ohio in 1996, with her late husband, where they helped start a local munch and educational group.

arcane is a retired massage therapist.  He relocated from Texas to Ohio, in 1997 to marry his late Mistress. She encouraged him to make floggers as a career, which keeps him busy vending and presenting at events all across the country.

They all met through the munch group and both couples became good friends.  After losing their spouses, Ms. Brenda and arcane began dating and were married, complete with collaring ceremony in Feb 2013.

Currently serving as Great Lakes Master/ slave,  they take pride in carrying the titles as education and understanding of the Master/slave dynamic is very important to them.

Kevin and katie

Kevin and katie are married, and have enjoyed a M/s relationship for 12 years. They have maintained a loving 24/7 TPE (Total Power Exchange) relationship while surviving raising teenagers, full time employment, a total-loss house fire, correcting huge debt, home renovations, and Alberta winters. Their presentations are a rollicking mix of humor and honesty – like any good scene, you might not be sure whether it feels good, or you should cry.

Kevin has clinical experience watching what makes couples succeed and what causes them to fail. Through moderating Power Exchange discussion groups together, they have heard the real struggles faced by real couples. Their mission is to help people create, maintain and optimize their relationships. They hope to encourage individuals and relationships to grow through proper focus on goals and priorities.

Actual workshop attendees say: “Your workshops were a breath of fresh air and the first meaningful TPE workshops to offer a practical strategic framework as well as some tactical behaviours to underpin it. They were also entertaining without being content-free.” and “Their presentations are so good, I skipped Bow Chicka Wow Wow for one.”

Kevin and katie present at Leather, Power Exchange, and Kink events in both the US and Canada.

NO CLASS THURSDAY 2/12 aka Anita is still sick – but at least she has good drugs now

Hello all,

I made it onto campus today and to a class – where I didn’t need to speak and where no contact was needed between me and my students. I went straight after to the doctor’s and got fussed at something fierce. It’s either bronchitis or pneumonia – I won’t know until they read the xrays in the morning but they’ve drugged me up and either way i have been forbidden from coming back to work until after I’ve been on a zpac for at least 24 hours.

Maybe this is cool for all of you – and I hope you are happy about the free time, but I hate it – seriously – because I feel like you are being shortchanged. There’s nothing to be done about it and I won’t wrangle a sub to simply keep you occupied in a seat.

I will see you all next week and we’ll reformulate our plan of action for the rest of the semester so you get the material you need without too much added fuss. I’ll see if I can offer up some extra days in the remainder of the semester for extra office hours if you want to take advantage of that as well.

Anita

No classes today (2/10)

Your fearless (?) leader is out again today. This means there will be no 2367 or 5440 meetings today.

I should be back tomorrow, though I’ll be a shell of my former self.

Please see the email that I sent out for each class. I also posted to Carmen News.

Cat Stevens… with apologies to Harry Chapin

Cat-Stevens-VedoVintageI always tell students to question everything and everyONE… and that includes me. I hate to be wrong (does anyone enjoy being wrong?) but sometimes I am.  I know… le’ gasp!

So… this happened…

I played the Ugly Kid Joe version of Cat’s in the Cradle in my Tue/Thu 2367 class yesterday and then spoke about the Cat Stevens version (um… does not exist, apparently). When I misspoke,  a student (H.M.) called me out on it in class (politely, mind you) and told me that it was Harry Chapin’s song. He was kind enough to follow up with an email per my request, so I wouldn’t forget to do some searching. I appreciated his information.

There are many reasons why this mistake was made by me, though that matters little. I have an old cassette tape recording that was attributed to Cat Stevens (apparently incorrectly) and when I searched online, I found ample places where his face overlaid that music in videos. Now I know that it is a common mistake.  A mistake… though… and I wanted to correct it HERE rather than just in that one HDFS 2367 course where H.M. sits.  I may have shared this info before in error and want to be sure to get that out there.  Sure, it’s a little mistake, but it was bad information and I don’t appreciate receiving bad info and don’t like disseminating it either.

Cat Stevens IS the artist that sang “Father and Son” so that part was true, and he DID change his name to Yusuf Islam… ding… another truth. But the “cat’s in the cradle” bit… clearly wroooooong.

So there you have it.

Thanks H.M.

And now, for a musical interlude…
