Extra Credit Reflection Opportunities
Depending on the class, students have the opportunity to complete reflection assignments for class credit and/or for extra credit.
Not a Student?
- Unless there are special circumstances, no minors (individuals under 18 years of age) are permitted in my classroom.
- If you wish to attend an event in one of my classrooms, you must contact me first to obtain permission if you aren’t one of my students.
- If you were previously a student, you are welcome to return but you should contact me first to secure a seat if one is available.
Students:
Please pay attention to the parenthetical note under each opportunity which alerts you to WHICH classes can benefit from attendance at WHICH events.
- Instructions on what kind of paper or reflection is required for credit in your class will be given to you in that class’s Carmen site.
- You are certainly welcome to attend a speaker or event for NO credit.
- Don’t wait until the end of the semester to take advantage of events.
If the event is held in one of my classrooms:
- Seating will be limited and you should be prepared to grab chairs from elsewhere, sit on the floor, perch on a windowill, etc
- There is no fee
- There may be a request for donation of item (when the food bank speaks in a class, for instance, I may request that you bring a food donation… if a domestic violence shelter comes to present, I may request that you bring a donation of toothpaste or shampoo)
If the event is held elsewhere:
- It is up to you to check applicable websites for information about cost, transportation, parking, restrictions, start and end times, and rain dates, etc.
- Remember that you represent not only yourself and your family as you move about in the world, but when you attend events… you represent OSU. Behave accordingly.
- NEVER arrange to attend an event that requires your presences (volunteer shift, police ride along, etc) unless you know you will BE THERE. These community members devote a great deal of time and energy to setting up these events and we don’t want to waste their time.
- If alcohol or other similar substances are present at an event, you should not partake. You are doing a class project and you need to be focused on that.
- You may not phone this in. You must GO… attend, view in real time, participate, experience this! It is considered academic misconduct to read about an event or view news coverage of it and then pretend as if you attended.

- Donate clothing and household goods. Items can be dropped off in the rear of the store during Free Store hours.

- Breakfast is served every Saturday at 9:15 am
- Other food ministries occur throughout the week, such as Wednesday Sandwiches served on the first Wednesday of each month

Visit an adult toy store. Do this ONLY if you are okay doing so and ONLY after reading the reflection prompts. This is not designed simply to titillate students, but rather to provide them with an opportunity to examine their own reactions to sexual topics and toys (particularly in context of Haidt and Hersh’s ethics discussion). While students are not restricted to Columbus locations, the following shops are within comfortable traveling distance of the campus. The first three are all walkable or accessible on the Number 2 COTA bus route that runs on High Street. Students MAY do this reflection exercise with other classmates or friends, but each student must right their own reflection AND must let me know if they went with another student (so I do not suspect academic misconduct if stories are similar).
Use common sense when entering and leaving a sexually-charged environment.

City of the Damned focuses on LGBT rights in the face of the brutal anti-homosexuality bill before the Ugandan Parliament. Although the death penalty has been withdrawn from the bill due heavily to international pressure, punishments are harsh and public opinion remains the biggest threat to the Ugandan LGBT community. The daring non-governmental organization Youth on Rock Foundation is fighting against this stigma by promoting economic empowerment among its members.

Il Rosa Nudo (Naked Rose) is an experimental film inspired by the life of the French ‘Pink Triangle’ deported Pierre Seel. At the very young age of seventeen, Sell was arrested by the Nazis during the war on charges of homosexuality and sent to a concentration camp. Community Cinema features screenings of documentaries open to all students, staff, faculty and community members. Community Cinema focuses on bringing together organizations, students and community members to learn, dialogue and get involved in key social issues of our time.
Join us as we watch and discuss Evolution of a Criminal. Filmmaker Darius Clark Monroe explores what led him to pull a heist as a teenager in Texas, and returns to the scene of the crime. By interviewing family members, close friends, and mentors, we learn about his transformation from a joyous childhood to the moment he realized the severity of his family’s financial problems, and how their struggles changed his outlook on his own life.

Volunteer at First English Lutheran Church’s Saturday Kids Camp.
You may not simply substitute another church for this activity. There are reasons why this church has been chosen.

First English Lutheran Church offs a Saturday Kid’s Camp for young people every Saturday from 10:00am – 1:30pm. Children ages 5 – 12 are welcome to participate. Please contact Megan at 252-3191 if you are interested in volunteering. The camp serves both breakfast and lunch. Children participate in organized games, group reading, Bible Study and more. The children’s center is equipped with a video game room, air hockey, ping pong table, arts and crafts center, and reading resources.

Refer to the essay prompt about this topic to get your thoughts jump-started. The symposium brings into critical conversation the fields of queer studies, disability studies, and human rights, with particular attention to how the discourse of human rights maps vulnerability onto certain bodies-but not others–and how these bodies take on the burden of representation in domestic and international politics and law. The symposium consists of four panels, each consisting of three speakers, and a featured luncheon speaker. All events are open to the public. Early registration is encouraged. Registration is free. Celebrate the holidays on the first Saturday of December at Holiday Hop along with thousands of visitors who converge on the strip, the epicenter of the High Street Experience. They come to celebrate art and partake in an evening of sights, sounds, food, shopping, and cosmopolitan holiday fun. Though many shops are open earlier, the Gallery Hop officially starts at 4 p.m. and runs to 10 p.m. with restaurants and bars staying open considerably later
This is an opportunity for students to visit the artistic area known as Short North. Lifespan Students may focus on a number of aspects of life and business
in the Short North.
Human Sexuality students may wish to focus on the GLBTQ&A
aspect (Stonewall, etc).
Balancing Work and Family Students should focus on the businesses we discussed in class and/or the workers you meet on the gallery hop.
You need not spend all six hours there!

Kai’s dissertation engages the stories and histories of Black Queer Los Angeles. Kai’s short documentary entitled, “It Gets Messy in Here” explores the intersections of race, gender and sexuality via the experiences of transgender men and Masculine of Center women of color.

Film/Discussion: A Girl Like Her

Director Ann Fessler (a graduate of The Ohio State University) introduces this screening and signs copies of her related book, The Girls Who Went Away, at a reception afterward.
The powerful A Girl Like Her reveals the hidden history of over a million women who became pregnant in the 1950s and 60s and were banished to maternity homes where they would ultimately give up their children in forced adoptions. At a time when sex education was minimal, single women were often ostracized into enduring their pregnancies in shame-filled institutional isolation. The film allows us to hear heartbreaking stories directly from the women who lived them, combined with footage from educational films and newsreels from the time that reinforce the era’s perceptions of sex, “illegitimate” pregnancy, and adoption. The program starts with a screening of Fessler’s short Cliff & Hazel (25 mins., video), a humorous and poignant portrait of her adoptive parents that was supported through the Wexner Center’s Film/Video Studio Program.

Visit an adult toy store. Do this ONLY if you are okay doing so and ONLY after reading the reflection prompts. This is not designed simply to titillate students, but rather to provide them with an opportunity to examine their own reactions to sexual topics and toys (particularly in context of Haidt and Hersh’s ethics discussion).
While students are not restricted to Columbus locations, the following shops are within comfortable traveling distance of the campus.
The first three are all walkable or accessible on the Number 2 COTA bus route that runs on High Street. Students MAY do this reflection exercise with other classmates or friends, but each student must right their own reflection AND must let me know if they went with another student (so I do not suspect academic misconduct if stories are similar).
Use common sense when entering and leaving a sexually-charged environment.

During the holiday (Thanksgiving or similar familial event where you actually SIT down with kin), talk to a relative that is at least 60 years old. A grandparent is the preferred individual. Reflect back on the story of Sophie from the start of class. Ask about the influences your relative experienced in development. If you are experiencing brain-freeze? Refer to the essay prompt about this topic to get your thoughts jump-started. Remember, though, the same prompts apply for all reflections, which means that you should consider what you EXPECT to hear as well as what you ACTUALLY hear.

Volunteer at First English Lutheran Church’s Saturday Kids Camp
You may not simply substitute another church for this activity. There are reasons why this church has been chosen.
(Do NOT sign up with the church for this activity unless you are going to ATTEND!)
First English Lutheran Church offs a Saturday Kid’s Camp for young people every Saturday from 10:00am – 1:30pm.
Children ages 5 – 12 are welcome to participate. Please contact Megan at 252-3191 if you are interested in volunteering.
The camp serves both breakfast and lunch. Children participate in organized games, group reading, Bible Study and more. The children’s center is equipped with a video game room, air hockey, ping pong table, arts and crafts center, and reading resources.

Turn the tide: Michigan winning Red Cross Blood Battle
The annual American Red Cross Blood Battle has kicked off, and Ohio State is trailing Michigan by about 200 pints. Blood drive locations can be found all over campus through Tuesday (11/20), and the winning school will be announced during the OSU-Michigan football game on Saturday (11/24). Donate and receive a free t-shirt, a coupon for six free wings with any purchase at Buffalo Wild Wings and a chance to win a pair of tickets to the big game.
